He can read well. He can talk your ear off about how engines work. He knows more about the solar system than you do.
And he cannot tell you what six plus four is, in third grade, after two years of flash cards.

Not "gets it wrong sometimes." Cannot retrieve it. He counts on his fingers every time, starting from one, and by next week the answer is gone again. Somewhere along the way a teacher has said he needs to try harder, or you have wondered whether you should be doing more drills at home, and he has started saying he is stupid.
There is a name for this, and it is a real, recognized diagnosis.
What it is actually called
The everyday word is dyscalculia. The formal diagnostic term in the DSM-5-TR is Specific Learning Disorder with impairment in mathematics, which can specify difficulty with number sense, memorization of arithmetic facts, accurate or fluent calculation, or accurate math reasoning.
In the American school system, the category used for services is Specific Learning Disability, with math calculation and math problem solving named as areas of eligibility under IDEA. In the UK it is generally identified as a specific learning difficulty and assessed by an educational psychologist or a specialist assessor.
The label matters because it is what unlocks evaluation and accommodations. A child described as "struggling with math" gets more worksheets. A child identified with a specific learning disorder in mathematics gets a plan.
I am writing this one from inside it. One of my children has a math disability, and the years before it had a name were the years of flash cards, of extra practice at the kitchen table, of wondering whether I was doing enough and whether they were trying hard enough. Both of those questions turned out to be the wrong questions.
It is roughly as common as dyslexia, and almost nobody looks for it
Estimates put dyscalculia at somewhere around three to seven percent of children. That is comparable to dyslexia. But most parents have heard of dyslexia and most schools screen for reading difficulty early, while math difficulty is far more likely to be attributed to effort, attitude, or a bad year with a teacher.
Part of this is cultural. Being bad at math is socially acceptable in a way that being unable to read is not. Adults say it about themselves at parties. So when a child cannot do it, the response is often a shrug rather than an evaluation.
What it actually looks like
Dyscalculia is not simply getting low math grades. The signature is a difficulty with the underlying sense of quantity, which then makes everything built on top of it unstable.
Number sense. Difficulty telling at a glance that four objects are four, without counting them. Trouble knowing which of two numbers is larger, especially quickly. Numbers do not carry an intuitive size.
Counting strategies that never mature. Still counting from one on fingers long after peers have moved on, rather than counting on from the larger number.
Fact retrieval. This is the one parents notice most. Math facts do not stick, no matter how many times they are practiced. He may get the answer by counting every single time, including facts he has practiced hundreds of times.
Place value. Confusion about what the digits mean, writing 103 for one hundred and three, losing track in multi-digit problems.
Time and money. Difficulty reading an analog clock, estimating how long something will take, handling change, judging whether a price is reasonable.
Estimation. No internal alarm when an answer is wildly off. If a calculation slip produces 4,000 as the answer to a problem about how many apples are in a basket, nothing feels wrong about it.
Sequences and directions. Trouble with the order of steps in a procedure, and often with left and right.
The tell that separates this from a gap in instruction is the mismatch. A child who reads fluently, reasons well in conversation, and grasps complex ideas in other subjects, but who cannot hold on to the fact that seven plus five is twelve, is showing you something specific rather than something general.
What it is not
Not low intelligence. A specific learning disorder is by definition specific. Many children with dyscalculia have strong verbal reasoning and average or above-average overall ability.
Not insufficient effort. By the time most families reach an evaluation, the child has usually done more math practice than his classmates, not less.
Not the same as math anxiety, though the two travel together. Anxiety about math can absolutely wreck performance on its own, and years of failing at something you keep being told is a matter of trying produces anxiety reliably. The distinction is which came first, and whether the difficulty is present even in low-pressure settings with unlimited time.
Not the same as ADHD math errors. This one confuses evaluators. A child with ADHD often knows the material and loses it to inattention, so errors are inconsistent, careless, and scattered: sign flips, skipped steps, a correct method with a copying mistake. Dyscalculia produces the opposite profile, consistent failure at the same core operations regardless of attention, with number sense itself unstable. Plenty of children have both, and both need naming.

How to get it assessed
In the United States, you can request a special education evaluation from your school district in writing, at no cost, and the district is obligated to respond within a set timeline. Put the request in writing and date it, because that date starts the clock. Ask specifically for assessment of math calculation and math problem solving, not a general academic screen.
The other route is a private psychoeducational or neuropsychological evaluation, which costs money but is usually faster and more detailed, and gives you a document the school has to consider.
Whichever route, ask that the evaluation include measures of number sense and math fluency rather than only a broad achievement score. A child who compensates by working slowly and carefully can produce an acceptable untimed score while being completely unable to work at pace, and an evaluation that misses that will conclude he is fine.
Also ask for reading and attention to be assessed at the same time. Co-occurrence with dyslexia and with ADHD is high, and finding one and stopping is how the second one goes unaddressed for years.
What to ask school for
Once identified, the accommodations that matter most are unglamorous:
- A calculator or multiplication chart for work where the point is the concept rather than the arithmetic
- Formula and procedure reference sheets, so working memory is not spent on retrieval
- Extra time, and fewer problems rather than the same number with more minutes
- Graph paper or lined paper turned sideways to keep columns aligned
- Credit for method rather than only the final answer
- Explicit permission to skip timed fact drills
That last one deserves its own line. Timed drills are the single most common intervention offered and one of the least useful here. They test the exact ability that is impaired, under the exact condition that impairs it further, and they are enormously effective at teaching a child that math is a thing he fails at publicly.
What actually helps
The instructional approach with the best evidence is explicit, structured, and multisensory: concrete objects first, then a drawn or visual representation, then the abstract symbols, in that order, with plenty of time at each stage. Number lines are particularly useful because they give quantity a physical, spatial form.
The thing that does not work is more of the same. If two years of worksheets have not built the fact recall, the third year of worksheets will not either, and each round costs him more confidence than it returns.
Life-skills math is worth teaching directly and separately rather than assuming it will arrive on its own: money, change, time, estimating, reading a schedule. These are the parts that matter most for an adult life, and they are teachable even where fact retrieval never becomes automatic.
The part that is not about math
A child who cannot do something everyone insists is a matter of effort will eventually reach a conclusion about himself. Usually he reaches it around age eight or nine, and usually he keeps it.
Which is why the diagnosis is worth pursuing even when the accommodations seem small. The most valuable thing it delivers is not the calculator. It is the sentence: your brain processes quantity differently, this has a name, and it is not because you did not try.
Watch too for the avoidance that follows. Refusing to start, tearing up worksheets, clowning during math, or claiming not to care are usually about protecting a sense of self, not about defiance. Why your child only participates when they know they will succeed covers that pattern, and when your young child refuses schoolwork at home covers what it looks like at the kitchen table. If working memory and organization are also part of the picture, executive dysfunction isn't laziness is the companion piece.
Bring evidence rather than impressions to the evaluation. Log which specific tasks collapse and which hold, how long homework actually takes, and what happens right before he shuts down, in LightMap. He is not lazy and he is not stupid. He is working without a tool most people never notice they have.
