For Therapists & Clinicians
A resource your families can use between sessions.
Birch & Light is a psychoeducational storytelling system designed to help parents understand what's happening beneath their child's behavior — and build the language to support them through it.
Birch & Light is not a clinical tool and does not diagnose, treat, or replace therapeutic care. It is designed to complement the work you are already doing with families.
What It Is
Story as the entry point. Understanding as the goal.
Each Birch & Light story is written to gently mirror a child's emotional experience — separation anxiety, big feelings, sensory overwhelm, social difficulty — without naming it clinically. The story gives a child the picture. The tools that surround it give the parent the language.
The Birch & Light Method pairs each story with nine tools across three stages: Understand, Connect, and Apply — including an original soundtrack of songs that children carry with them long after the story ends. Parents move through the experience at their own pace, building insight and shared language they can bring back into the family — and into the therapy room.
"A child who feels understood behaves differently than a child who feels managed. There is a beautiful child underneath the behavior. Birch & Light exists to help parents find them again."
Stories are developmentally informed, emotionally honest, and written without prescriptive language. They do not tell a child what to feel or how to fix themselves. They simply say: this is real, and you are not alone in it.
The Birch & Light Method
Nine tools. Three stages. One family that starts to make sense.
Every tool in the method was built for a different moment in a family's day — and a different part of the therapeutic journey.

How Clinicians Use It
A between-session resource that actually prepares families.
As a between-session assignment
Recommend a Birch & Light story that mirrors what a family is navigating. The parent reads first, listens to the podcast, then shares the story with their child. Families arrive at the next session with shared language and a starting point.
To open a conversation a child can't start
Children often can't articulate what they're experiencing. A story can say it for them. Birch & Light stories are designed to work in session as a non-threatening entry point into themes the child hasn't been able to approach directly.
To support the parent alongside the child
The parent guide and podcast are designed specifically for the adult in the room. Supporting the parent's understanding is often as important as the child's therapeutic work itself.
To receive cleaner intake information
Parents who use LightMap™ can arrive with documented observations — patterns, triggers, frequency, context — rather than impressions. The shareable report gives you a cleaner starting point and surfaces patterns parents may not have noticed themselves.
LightMap™ with Muse
The tool that turns a parent's observations into something you can work with.
LightMap is a private parent-facing app that captures behavioral observations in real time, identifies patterns over time, and generates a clean shareable report. Parents log moments in about twenty seconds — what happened, when, the context, the intensity.
Over days and weeks, LightMap surfaces what the parent couldn't hold in their head: the pattern behind the behavior. Muse lives inside LightMap as an AI coaching companion. Built from the patterns a parent has already logged, Muse meets the parent in the hard moment with language that actually fits their child — not a generic script.
- Parents can generate and share a clean weekly report with you directly
- Observations are timestamped, tagged, and searchable
- Useful for co-parents, school teams, and other caregivers
- Private and parent-controlled — no third-party data sharing

LightMap generates a full pre-session brief — moments logged, pattern clusters, what helped, bright spots, and a suggested focus for your next session. Everything a therapist needs to walk in prepared.

Framing It for Families
How to recommend Birch & Light to a family.
Language that works
- A psychoeducational resource that supports what we're working on together
- A way to build shared language at home around what your child is experiencing
- A between-session tool that helps you stay connected to the themes we're exploring
- A way for your child to feel seen without feeling examined
- Something that meets your child where they are, in their world
Language to avoid
- A therapy tool or clinical intervention
- A treatment for anxiety, sensory processing, or any diagnosed condition
- A replacement for the work we're doing in session
- Evidence-based in a clinical research sense
- Something that will fix what your child is going through
A note on HSA & FSA coverage
Some families may be able to use HSA or FSA funds for Birch & Light when it is recommended as part of a child's emotional wellness support. A written recommendation from a therapist, pediatrician, or other licensed provider can support a family's reimbursement request with their plan administrator. Every plan is different — we encourage families to check with their provider.
A note on clinical positioning
Birch & Light is a psychoeducational storytelling resource. It is informed by developmental psychology, attachment theory, and emotional regulation research, and is created by a certified coach and parent with deep lived experience supporting children through emotional and behavioral challenges.
It is not a clinical tool, does not carry clinical claims, and is not intended to diagnose or treat any condition. It is designed to complement the work of therapists, counselors, pediatricians, and other professionals who support children and families — not to replace it.
